A Trailblazer and Inspirational Ivy: The Leah B. Gordon Memorial Scholarship

Leah B. Gordon holds a special place in the hearts of all who knew her, as she was one of the first members of the Omicron Lambda Omega Chapter. Her impact on the sisterhood and the community continues to resonate, and her memory remains an enduring source of inspiration.

Initiated into Omicron Lambda Omega Chapter in May of 1987, Soror Leah was a vital part of the historic "8 Up" line, the first ever initiated by the chapter. Embodying the spirit of sisterhood, she was #8 on her line, lovingly known as "Sweet Potato Pie." Among her line sisters were current members Linda Bryant-Landry and Marie DeLarge, along with five other candidates. Her
dedication and involvement extended to serving on various committees, notably the Kwanzaa Committee, where her passion for uplifting the community shone brightly.

Born on January 16, 1948, Soror Leah was the beloved daughter of George and Gwendolyn Berniard. Her journey led her to Dillard University, where she pursued her passion for education, graduating in 1971 with a BA in Elementary Education. For 18 years, she imparted her wisdom and love to Pre-K Special Education students, making a lasting impact on their lives and
shaping the future generation.

Soror Leah's legacy of love and family is an integral part of her story. She leaves behind two cherished daughters, Courtenay Montrel Smith, residing in St. Louis, Missouri, and Tyner Leah Gordon, who calls Manhattan, New York, home. Her profound love extended to her three precious grandchildren, Leah, Langston, and Maya, who were the light of her life.

Leah became an Ivy Beyond The Wall December 22, 1988 leaving a journey marked by resilience, compassion, and a relentless dedication to uplifting others. Her love for Alpha Kappa Alpha, and her pioneering spirit will forever be cherished.

As we honor her memory through Leah B. Gordon Scholarship, we aim to uphold her legacy of educational excellence and community service. This scholarship stands as a testament to her unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation and leaving a lasting impact on the world.

Let us continue her legacy of love, sisterhood, and service, and may her memory be a guiding light for all who walk in her footsteps.
